Nelson Mandela was labeled a terrorist by Western governments, including the United States, during the 1980s. This designation was due to his association with the African National Congress (ANC), which was seen by these governments as a terrorist organization because of its opposition to the apartheid regime in South Africa. Mandela remained on U.S. terrorism watch lists until 2008.
